Dont Give Up The Ship

Dont Give Up The Ship

from $35.00

There’s a lot of important history and meaning in the sentence “Don’t give up the ship.” If you are a history nerd like me, you know the origin of the sentence goes back to 1813 and the last words of James Lawrence in the months prior to the Battle of Lake Erie. Oliver Hazard Perry admired his friend’s final words so much that he had them stitched into the flag that he flew over his ship. The flag didn’t include an apostrophe in the word “Dont,” and so I don’t include one on this print, either. Oh, and if you aren’t a history nerd like me, you can read all about it online. There are lots of different opinions and uses of that sentence, but it’s importance and relevance throughout history are obvious.
